Legendary graphic designer Peter Saville and long-time collaborator, photographer Nick Knight are the men behind the 2004 Pirelli Calendar which has just been launched at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Read the full story here.

The photographer Nick Knight selected illustrated his photos of each of the models featured in the calendar with a quote from the following women from the worlds of art, fashion, literature, music and film. The star-studded line-up comprises Bjork, Catherine Deneuve, Tracey Emin, Marianne Faithful, Heidi Fleiss, Emma Forrest, Courtney Love, Stella McCartney, Catherine Millet, Aimee Mullins, Isabella Rossellini, Emmanuelle Seigner, Liv Tyler and Elizabeth Wurtzel.

Peter Saville is credited as Art Director for the project. According to Peter, "The Pirelli Calendar has become an institution of the 21st century, so we decided that the women should decide how they would be represented in the 2004 calendar".

No, it's not a new no holds barred sporting event but rather a photographic exhibition at Sand Bar in Grosvenor St, Manchester.

The exhibition comprises photographs of The Durutti Column by the late Mark Warner (his favourite band was The Durutti Column) plus a complementary set of The Fall by Michael Pollard (his favourite band is The Fall). In at numbers 157 and 361 respectively in the Rolling Stone 500th issue '500 Greatest Albums of All Time' are 'Closer' by Joy Division and 'Substance' by New Order. Wot no Bummed, Vini Reilly, Technique or Unknown Pleasures!?

Even more of a surprise omission is the classic eponymous The Stone Roses album (Silvertone) from 1989. It isn't even in the Top 500 whereas it regularly features in the Top Five in polls originating in the UK.

Silent Partners is the new band featuring Warren 'Dermo' Dermody, the ex-lead singer of Northside, Craig Smith, Tom Lee and Malc. They've been gigging for a while, including supporting the Bluetones, and will be playing at Manchester's The Late Room (Peter Street) on Saturday 20 December 2003.

The official Durutti Column website has announced a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy Vini Reilly's extremely rare Pete Townsend Signature SG Gibson guitar.

The new Joy Division limited box set on Bertus which was lined up to be released this week has been pulled.

The black box contains 3 live cds (Preston, Les Bains Douches and Paradiso), a reproduction poster and a t-shirt and would have sold for around 40 GBP. The first two discs are previously-released live recordings of classic gigs packaged in Peter Saville artwork.

However, it seems that the third disc, which actually includes three tracks included as bonuses on the Les Bains Douches ('Passover', 'New Dawn Fades' and 'Atrocity Exhibition'), has not been officially licensed for release, doesn't have Saville artwork and is already available as a bootleg that most hardcore Joy Division fans will have anyway.

A note on catalogue numbers. The first two discs were allocated official Factory Too catalogue numbers (Facd 2.60 and Facd 2.61) despite being unofficial releases on the NMC label. The new third disc has been allocated the number Facd 2.63. Confusingly, on Amazon.co.uk where the box set is listed for sale, the label credit for all these live albums is listed as 'Factory'(!) The obvious number to have allocated to the box set would be Facd 2.62 as this remains vacant. Facd 2.63 was previously used for the Space Monkeys' March of the Scarecrows cd single.

That's not to say that Factory never allocated duplicate catalogue numbers in the good old days. Indeed it happened many a time but that's another story.

The resemblance of the front cover of the latest Texas album 'Careful What You Wish For' to that of New Order's Get Ready has already been noted on these pages.

Now it seems that the album's title also is not the only one of its kind. The second disc in the forthcoming double cd by Revenge's One True Passion V2.0 is subtitled 'Be Careful What You Wish For' which is almost the title of the Texas album (just take away the 'Be'). Don't know who had the idea for the title first mind you.

My copy of Gentle Sound by The Railway Children arrived in the post on Saturday (it's only available direct from railwaychildren.co.uk) and that stayed on the stereo all Saturday. Duly inspired I dug out the original 'Brighter' and 'A Gentle Sound' 12" singles on good old-fashioned vinyl for a spin on Sunday. Jingle jangle pop rock at it's best.

'New York Heroes' is a cd compiled by Moby (apparently his first ever) and came free with the November 2003 edition of Mixmag. It's 12 tracks are all in some way connected with NYC. It contains a preview of the new Voodoo Child album which is the dance alter ego of Moby. The first Voodoo Child album 'The End Of Everything" was great, especially 'Dog Heaven'.

The double compact disc features the whole of the sole Factory album, One True Passion (Fact 230), the Gun World Porn EP (Facd 327) plus rarities and previously unreleased material.

It's a full 2 and a half hours long! There's a chance that mail order business will commence slightly before the official release date but this isn't confirmed yet. More news as it breaks.

The Peter Saville Show transfers to Urbis in Manchester on 23 January 2004 according to this story at manchesteronline.co.uk.

The transfer comes after its trip to Tokyo which came after the inaugural run at the Design Museum in London.

Thanks to Rob Stanzel, Durutti-meister General, for the latest word on the next album by The Durutti Column. The 14-track album is as yet untitled (and may continue to be so?) and is due to be released in Spring 2004 on Kooky who previously released The Return of the Sporadic Recordings.

Rob also says that "there may be a single on another label. London is due to release a "definitive collection" in March, a double CD compilation with no new tracks. (This may also be the point at which the Once reissues are withdrawn as previously suggested.)"

All this plus a planned US tour too!

At Fac 51 The Hacienda on 10 November 1983 - Danse Society. Still on history, Fac 229! The Music Week Factorial records that in November 1986 The Durutti Column's Vini Reilly album is Factory's first DAT release. All subsequent Factory releases follow suit."

Factory's series of boxed cassette releases released in the Eighties represented "a new line of cassette boxes releasing new titles as well as some back catalogue" according to the mail order catalogue from Of Factory New York. The new packaging was designed by Peter Saville who used the classic font Bembo on the front and side of the colour-coded boxes. Not every planned cassette was released. That same catalogue lists Fact 24c A Factory Quartet. Similarly a brown cassette box version of The Wake's Fact 130 Here Comes Everybody was never to see the light of day...

A most definitely untouched photo of the Lawrence Weiner poster for the Section 25 / Quando Quango gig at the Ritz which has been the subject of some discussion on the Faclist. Please excuse the reflections! Thanks again to Colin at Vinyl Revival which is a veritable Aladdin's Cave.

On the poster itself, the corner cut-outs are reminscent of the one on the cover of Thick Pigeon's 'Too Crazy Cowboys' and indeed this too was designed by Lawrence Weiner.

Crosby Homes' development of the site of the Haçienda as the Haçienda Apartments continues apace and it looks like the new building will be open soon as these photos I took yesterday show. The new building has been voted one of the Top Ten Worst Buildings in Manchester by readers of the PrideOfManchester.com website. Naturally, the original Fac 51 The Hacienda was number four in the same website's sister poll the Top Ten Best Buildings in Manchester.

Back in 1984, the Hacienda celebrated its Second Birthday. The poster has been somewhat elusive but I grabbed a photo of the one hanging on the wall of Vinyl Revival, Colin White's excellent record shop in Hilton Street, Manchester.

The new Factory record shop was also open, but thanks to being delayed on the M6 on the way up and having to get to Edgeley Park for the Stockport County v QPR game (a 2-1 QPR win) I was unable to check it out.
